Ray Wilkins has hailed John Terry as the foundation of Chelsea’s success as the Blues skipper looks set to lift the Premier League trophy for the fourth time in his career.

Terry scored the second goal at the King Power Stadium on Wednesday as Chelsea came from behind to beat Leicester 3-1, putting them within touching distance of winning the Premier League.

And former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins, who worked with Terry when he served as assistant boss to ex-manager Luis Felipe Scolari, praised the one-club defender for his leadership ability and tactical awareness.

The only problem you get with John is that he won’t get off the training pitch, but that’s why at 34 years-old he’s still playing to this fantastic level.

“John is John. He’s just a fantastic defender and he’s a throwback,” Wilkins told The Morning View on Sky Sports News HQ.

“John has never had any pace but importantly for him the first 10 yards are in his head. He reads the game so well. Wherever the ball is he’s in the right position in relation to where the ball is.

“He sticks his head in the way of the ball and defends properly and I think he’s been the basis from where Chelsea have sprung from. Defensively they’ve been solid.

“John brings everybody together at the club and he’s the first one out onto the training pitch. The only problem you get with John is that he won’t get off the training pitch, but that’s why at 34 years old he’s still playing to this fantastic level.”
