Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse is the stellar name in Senegal coach Alain Giresse's preliminary squad of 28 players for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Cisse has struck 16 goals in 31 starts for his country and his seven domestic goals this season have helped his club into the top half of the Premier League.

However, former United team-mate Demba Ba, now at Besiktas, was omitted by former France midfielder Giresse.

French-born Ba, 29, who has been in great form for his club since moving from Chelsea last summer, took part in the 2012 Cup of Nations where he played in all three games as the Lions of Teranga fell in the first round.

West Ham pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Diafra Sakho, Stoke striker Mame Biram Diouf and Sadio Mane of Southampton are the other Premier League performers in Giresse's 28-man party.

Giresse, at the helm of the Lions since January 2013, named just one home-based player, Diambars goalkeeper Ousmane Mane.

Senegal have been drawn in Group C to face South Africa, Ghana and Algeria in the tournament in Equatorial Guinea, which runs from January 17 to February 8.

Senegal made it to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002, the year they also reached the final of the Nations Cup in Mali, where they lost on penalties to Cameroon.

Senegal squad: Coundoul, Gomis, Camara, Mane, Toure, Gassama, Sane, Mbodj, Souare, Djilobodji, Drame, Mbaye, Mbengue, Kouyate, Kouli Diop, Gueye, Badji, Sane, Alioune Ndiaye, Alfred Ndiaye, Konate, Sakho, Diouf, Mane, Sow, Cisse, Saivet, Ndoye.
