Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is targeting success in the Capital One Cup as he looks to guide the club to their first piece of silverware for 46 years.

Bobby Moncur captained the Magpies to victory over Ujpest Dozsa in the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup but they have failed in their subsequent bids to secure a trophy.

United face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Wednesday having already disposed of Manchester City and Crystal Palace away from home in the tournament.

Pardew will be hoping for a more successful return to north London after seeing his side lose 4-1 to Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday and in doing so hopes to silence Moncur.

It will be a tough game, but we will go there very strong.

"I call him our president, Bob Moncur is on the bus every week to remind me,” said Pardew. “I can't get away from it, but no-one would be more delighted than Bob if we can achieve something.

"The cup game is something different, we know it's the quarter-final.

"We have beaten two Premier League teams away from home, we have got to do a third time, it will be a tough game, but we will go there very strong.

"The win at Man City did give us energy, it gave us a lift and the win at Palace gave us a lift as well.

"It gives you that spirit to think something can be achieved. It's as important game for Spurs as it is for us.

“One of us will be in the semi-final, both clubs would love to be in that position."
