Youngsters Stevie May and Ryan Gauld have been drafted into the Scotland squad for the first time for the forthcoming European Championship qualifying double-header.

The pair, who left Scotland in the summer, have been named in Gordon Strachan's 27-man pool for the matches against Georgia, at Ibrox on October 11, and Poland in Warsaw three days later.

Gauld has earned his place in the squad following a move to Sporting Lisbon while former St Johnstone striker May has been picked after impressing for new club Sheffield Wednesday.

Dundee United midfielder Gauld, 18, has previously represented Scotland at U19 and U21 level while 21-year-old May, who has scored three goals in eight Championship starts this season, has been capped eight times at U21 level.

Aberdeen defender Mark Reynolds is among just three home-based Scots in the squad alongside Celtic pair Craig Gordon and Scott Brown, who returns for his country after recovering from the hamstring injury which caused him to miss the opening 2-1 loss to Germany.

On the youngsters' inclusion in the squad, Strachan said: "They are good young players. I like to do that. If you look at the squads over the last year or so, I like to bring in people that I don't know personally.

"I don't know them personally but I like to see how they deal with the squad and I just like to meet these young players. I'm sure in the future they will make an impression and will be regulars in the squad.

"It's good to meet them and see how they interact with the rest of the squad. I may add another one into that, a player that I have only seen from afar. I'm waiting on injury reports from games tonight."

Squad: Gordon (Celtic), Marshall (Cardiff), McGregor (Hull),  Berra (Ipswich), Forsyth (Derby), Greer (Brighton), Hanley (Blackburn), Hutton (Aston Villa), Martin (Norwich), Reynolds (Aberdeen), Robertson (Hull), Whittaker (Norwich), Anya (Watford), Bannan (C Palace), Brown (Celtic),  Bryson (Derby), Burke (N Forest), Dorrans (West Brom), D Fletcher (Man Utd), Gauld (Sporting Lisbon) Maloney (Wigan), McArthur (C Palace), Morrison (West Brom), S Fletcher (Sunderland), May (Sheffield Wednesday), Martin (Derby), Naismith (Everton).
