Charlie Nicholas: Liverpool's defence is still their weakness

Image: Charlie Nicholas: Says Liverpool must sort out their defence

Charlie Nicholas believes that Liverpool's defence is still their weakness and that they have a lot of work to do to sort it out.

The Anfield side conceded 50 goals last season in the Premier League, effectively losing them the title and have already conceded eight goals this time round in the league.

They let in two more on Tuesday night against Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup and Nicholas thinks that defending set pieces is their main concern.

He said: "Again last night, every set-piece that came in was a problem for them.

"All night there were problems and then they took a risk at the end and got a penalty given against them.

"(The first goal) is from a simple ball in from (Grant) Leadbitter and there's no one protecting the space at the front post and that means it’s easy for a midfield player (Adam Reach) to put the ball in.

"Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a lovely free kick and he just missed one before half time when he could’ve easily scored again."

He added: "(Patrick) Bamford came on and caused them problems straight away. Kolo Toure took a risk and people were saying to me about a red card but it wasn't a red card and then with the last kick of the ball, how cool was (Patrick) Bamford?"

Rodgers added Dejan Lovren to his side from Southampton in a £20million move to strengthen Liverpool's defence, but also sold Daniel Agger to Brondy for £3million.

And so far Liverpool have only been able to keep one clean sheet in the Premier League, that coming in their 3-0 victory over Tottenham at White Hart Lane in August.

Liverpool play Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the season on Saturday and Rodgers will be hoping that the Reds can put their defensive concerns behind them and get their season back on track.
