Stojkovic pulls out after being abused by Serbs on the way to game

Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic sensationally pulled out of their World Cup qualifier against Italy after being abused by his own fans. The tension between Stojkovic and the fans is believed to emanate from his decision to play for Partizan Belgrade, having once played for arch-rivals Red Star.

Venting

It was thought fans may have been venting against him after Serbia were beaten 3-1 by Estonia last week, but it appears more tribal issues are to blame. Stojkovic was replaced by Zeljko Brkic after the abuse from his own fans on the way to the game proved to be the final straw. The game was also delayed for 35 minutes as the two sets of fans clashed before the game as stewards and police were called in to separate them. After the game finally kicked off the game was suspended after just six minutes following more crowd disturbances.
