Germany defender Christoph Metzelder believes the biggest threat when they play Wales will be striker Craig Bellamy.

Wales striker identified as main threat

Germany defender Christoph Metzelder believes the biggest threat when they play Wales in their Euro 2008 qualifier will be striker Craig Bellamy. Metzelder's side are favourites to win the clash at the Millennium Stadium as they head into the match top of Group D on 19 points - five points clear of second-placed Czech Republic. Victory will all-but ensure their place in next year's tournament in Switzerland and Austria but the Real Madrid player is not taking the game lightly as he looks to clamp down Wales captain Bellamy. "All I can remember of the last time I played against Wales is John Hartson. He is tough. All I can say is that we both hurt a lot after that match," Metzelder said. "I know all about Bellamy from watching him in European games and with Liverpool. "He is not tall or physical, but he is very quick off the mark. We must be on the look-out for him all the time. "We will have to take him out of the game if we want to reduce the danger that Wales can offer. "Bellamy is Wales' most formidable asset and we know what he is capable of doing if we give him the chance."

Fighting spirit

Metzelder also knows it will not be an easy game and is not taking it for granted that Germany will claim the three points. "We always knew that the away games with Wales and the Republic of Ireland would be the tough ones, they both have great fighting spirit and they will cover every blade of grass," he continued. "But we are not coy or shy, we can be tough too. What we must do is to play our one-two passes and get the penetrative pass through their defence quickly. "The only way is to keep the ball and keep Wales' defence as busy as possible."
