Hamburg win at Wolfsburg to leapfrog defending champions

Hamburg leapfrogged Wolfsburg into second in the German Bundesliga after claiming a 4-2 away win against the defending champions. Wolfsburg came into the game in third place having won their two opening games but Hamburg joined Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke on seven points after a lightning start at the Volkswagen Arena. Paolo Guerrero put Bruno Labbadia's men into a third-minute lead with his second goal of the season and Eljero Elia put the visitors firmly in control just four minutes later. Wolfsburg started the second half strongly with Zvjezdan Misimovic pulling one back in the 52nd minute and Obafemi Martins, a half-time substitute for Karim Ziani, equalised four minutes later with his second goal for the club. But Hamburg were not to be denied and Mladen Petric put them back in front with 15 minutes left before victory was sealed in stoppage time by late sub Romeo Castelen, who finally registered his first Bundesliga goal for the club after joining from Feyenoord in 2007.

First wins for Werder and Bochum

Werder Bremen climbed into the top half after cruising to a 3-0 home win against Borussia Monchengladbach. Claudio Pizarro started his first game since returning to Werder last week on a permanent deal after spending last season on loan from Chelsea. And the Peru striker carried on from where he left off last term, firing a 21st-minute opener before grabbing a second goal seven minutes before the break. The visitors rarely threatened a comeback in the second half and Naldo completed the scoring for Werder late on. Bochum also claimed their first league win of the season as they won 1-0 at home to Hertha Berlin in Sunday's other Bundesliga game. Anthar Yahia broke the deadlock in the 49th minute and that proved to be enough for Marcel Koller's men to get off the mark and go up to 11th, while Hertha are 13th.
