Knopper punished by Vitesse

Vitesse Arnhem have demoted Richard Knopper to the reserve squad this week.

Vitesse Arnhem have demoted midfielder Richard Knopper as punishment for walking out on training last week.

The former Ajax man was disciplined by Vitesse's board after leaving training early following a dispute with manager Aad de Mos.

Knopper was left out of Vitesse's season opener on Friday evening, as the Arnhem club started their Eredivisie campaign with a 2-1 away win at Sparta Rotterdam.

The 29-year-old has been ordered to train with the club's reserves side until September 1.

Vitesse, meanwhile, have handed a trial to Austrian international goalkeeper Thomas Mandl.

De Mos is keen on finding another goalkeeper after Vitesse number two Piet Velthuizen recently underwent an operation to repair a damaged knee meniscus.

Mandl's former clubs include Austria Vienna and Sturm Graz, as well as Swiss giants Basel.
