Belgian defender plays down reports of imminent switch

Gill Swerts has distanced himself from speculation linking him with a move to newly-promoted West Brom. The versatile Belgian has dropped down the pecking order at Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar of late, fuelling reports that he could be set for a summer switch elsewhere. A move to England has been touted, with West Brom looking to strengthen after securing an immediate return to the Premier League. Swerts, though, claims he knows nothing about such a switch and insists the Baggies have made no contact with AZ. "No, I haven't heard anything from WBA," he told VoetbalPrimeur.nl. "I don't know where this is coming from. I went to see our technical director, but he didn't know anything about it either. It comes out of nowhere."

Positive

While keen to play down any transfer talk for now, Swerts admits he would welcome the opportunity to play in the Premier League at some stage. "I think that every player from the Eredivisie wants to play in England," he added. "The Premier League, but the Championship as well, is fantastic. A few friends of mine are playing in the Championship. Every now and then we speak to each other and they often tell me very positive things. "The level of football is very, very high. Do I think I would fit in England? That is hard to tell. It's a new competition, a different country."
