Stam's fitness hope

Jaap Stam is confident of shaking off a thigh problem in time to face PSV.

Jaap Stam is confident of shaking off a thigh problem in time for Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven.

Stam picked up the injury in the recent Serie A clash with Parma and left the field as a precaution.

The club are set to undertake further checks on the towering defender on Monday, but Stam is determined to pass the fitness test.

"I felt the muscle stretching," said Stam. "I hope to recover for Tuesday.

"I want and I must play: firstly for Nesta's ban, but also because I want to be there. It's much too important."

Stam spent three seasons at PSV and he would dearly love another chance to shine against his old club.

Meanwhile, PSV's Robert de Pinho de Souza - who scored the penalty which booked the Dutch side victory over Lyon in the last round, will miss the clash.

The Brazilian suffered ankle ligament damage in the recent clash with Vitesse Arnhem.
