"Jaap is a big player," ten Cate told the club's website.
"Jaap will fill in the role in his own way. He is also someone to whom the other players will listen.
"Jaap is a winner. The young players can learn a lot from him."
Stam is thrilled to have been made captain of the Amsterdam giants.
"I was sometimes the captain of Manchester United, but never the captain," he said.
"I find it a tremendous honour that I am the captain of Ajax.
"Ajax are a big club and I feel we can do something great with this squad."
Ajax, meanwhile, have signed South African teenager Stanton Lewis after he impressed at sister club Ajax Cape Town.
