Eredivisie Review: Vitesse Arnhem end winless run with 3-1 victory against Excelsior

Abiola Dauda scored a hat-trick to lead Vitesse Arnhem to their first Eredivisie win in almost seven months on Sunday.

Vitesse had taken just four points from a possible 39 since beating NAC Breda at the start of March, but they were celebrating a win once again thanks to Dauda, whose treble saw off promoted Excelsior 3-1.

The Nigerian, a summer signing from Red Star Belgrade, opened his account in the 40th minute and then struck again in the 60th and 65th minutes to complete his hat-trick, with Excelsior only able to reply through Jeff Stans' 86th-minute penalty.

Despite the win, Vitesse still remain in the bottom two of the standings but they are now level on four points with Go Ahead Eagles and FC Dordrecht, who lost 1-0 at home to NAC on Sunday.

Dordrecht, who also won promotion last season, had looked set to claim a point but were undone by an 87th-minute winner from 20-year-old former AC Milan prospect Kingsley Boateng.

In Sunday's other two games, FC Utrecht and ADO Den Haag drew 0-0 while Cambuur Leeuwarden climbed up to third with a 3-0 home victory over FC Groningen.

All three goals came in the second half, with Albert Rusnak (52), Bartholomew Ogbeche (74) and Sander van der Streek (80) the men on the scoresheet as unbeaten Cambuur moved on to 11 points, one behind joint leaders PSV Eindhoven and PEC Zwolle.
