Dutch midfielder joins Austrian outfit on three-year deal

Holland international David Mendes da Silva has signed a three-year deal with Red Bull Salzburg. The Austrian side confirmed on Friday that they had secured the services of the midfielder from Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar. The 27-year-old helped AZ win the Dutch league title in 2009 and made his international debut in 2007. The former Sparta Rotterdam and NAC Breda man now has seven international appearances to his name and although he was part of Bert van Marwijk's provisional World Cup squad, he failed to make the final cut. Salzburg have won the Austrian Bundesliga for the last two seasons and are coached by a fellow Dutchman, Huub Stevens. Mendes will play his first game for his new employers on Friday in a friendly against his former club.
