Shinji Kagawa admitted it was "difficult to describe" how he was feeling after his fairy-tale return to Borussia Dortmund.

The Japan midfielder scored on his second debut for the club he rejoined from Manchester United this summer and also played a part in the first goal of a 3-1 win over Freiburg.

The 25-year-old was given a hero's welcome on his return to a club he represented for two successful seasons before joining the Red Devils in 2012.

"What I feel right now is difficult to describe," he told reporters at the Westfalenstadion on Saturday.

"But it's definitely a feeling of great joy to have been able to play in this stadium again. I had goosebumps."

Kagawa won back-to-back Bundesliga titles during his first spell for the club and was synonymous with their success.

"When the whole South Stand called my name, it was an indescribable feeling," he said.

"It was a very warm-hearted welcome. The fans had already welcomed me back and that gave me even more motivation to play well for them, and I think I managed that against Freiburg."

His first goal in well over a year was the result, yet he revealed how he was not really ready to return.

An injury to Marco Reus meant he was in the starting XI earlier than he expected.

"I had a bit of cramp and that's why I had to come off," he said. "My job in the coming weeks is to improve my fitness.

"To be honest, I'm still not 100 per cent yet."

That lack of fitness is largely due to the absence of match practice for United last season, but he does not regret moving to Old Trafford.

"It's not the case that I got nothing out of the two years I spent in England with Manchester United," he said.

"I think that I learnt something there too. Maybe now I'm back, people are going to see a new Kagawa."
