Hamburg left it late at
Bochum as Andreas Johansson's own goal gave the visitors a 2-1 away success.
The Swede - under great pressure from Ruud van Nistelrooy - touched home a Ze Roberto cross with just two minutes remaining to move Bruno Labbadia's men back to within three points of fifth-placed Werder Bremen.
Philipp Heerwagen had no chance denying the visitors their opener on 17 minutes when Robert Tesche powered Dennis Aogo's cross into the net.
Bochum rode the storm and levelled matters on the half-hour mark when Zlatko Dedic latched on to Joel Epalle's knock-down and placed his shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
However, Johansson's late own goal kept Hamburg in the hunt for a place in next season's Europa League.
Elsewhere,
Nurnberg remain in deep trouble at the wrong end of the Bundesliga after
Wolfsburg battled to victory at the Franken Stadion.
The home side stay just a point above the relegation play-off spot after succumbing to second-half goals from Edin Dzeko and Grafite.
Nurnberg had their chances but never looked like securing a vital point once Dzeko had opened the scoring after 66 minutes, with Grafite adding a second 12 minutes later.
