Hamburg keeper goes Dutch

Hamburg's Martin Pieckenhagen has joined De Eredivise new-boys Heracles.

Hamburg goalkeeper Martin Pieckenhagen has made a surprise move to De Eredivise new-boys Heracles Almelo.

The 33-year-old had fallen out of favour at the AOL-Arena after signing a new contract with the Bundesliga outfit in January.

The former Hansa Rostock man made over 200 appearances in Germany's top flight although has now made the decision to try his luck in Holland.

Pieckenhagen revealed that he has concurred on a move to Heracles, insisting he was impressed with the club's keen pursuit of him.

"I am joining them and as the number one choice," Pieckenhagen told Kicker-Sportmagazin.

"I am further impressed by the way they showed me that they wanted just me."

Pieckenhagen will once again link up with Nico-Jan Hoogma who is now captain of Heracles after a previous spell with Hamburg.
