Japan international Kagawa notched his second of the game on 55 minutes before Fabian Johnson netted a 63rd minute consolation for Hoffenheim.
Schalke came from behind to beat
Cologne 4-1 and join Munich and Dortmund at the top of the table
Lukas Podolski gave the home side the lead in the fourth minute, but Schalke turned the game on its head in the last half an hour with Ciprian Marica on target twice and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scoring from the penalty spot.
Marc Hoger made it four as Schalke also did themselves a favour in terms of improving their goal difference.
Miso Brecko was shown a red card to compound the defeat for Cologne.
Augsburg hit back to draw 2-2 at home with fellow strugglers
Kaiserslautern, who had gone in front through Florian Dick's double.
Marcel de Jong put Augsburg into a fifth minute lead, only for Dick to level on 25 minutes and then give the visitors the lead three minutes after half-time.
Olcay Sahan hit the bar for Kaiserslautern on 59 minutes and Augsburg levelled seven minutes later through Stephan Hain.
Werder Bremen and
Bayer Leverkusen remain adrift of the top four positions after playing out a 1-1 draw.
Former Chelsea striker Claudio Pizarro gave Bremen a 29th minute lead, but Stefan Reinhartz earned Leverkusen a point with a 57th minute equaliser.
Hamburg put some breathing space between themselves and the relegation places after holding on for a 2-1 victory at
Hertha Berlin.
Marcell Jansen and Mladen Petric scored in the first half for Hamburg before Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored with nine minutes to go for Hertha.
