Reinke has emergency operation

Werder Bremen goalkeeper Andreas Reinke has undergone an emergency operation.

Werder Bremen goalkeeper Andreas Reinke underwent an emergency operation on Wednesday after being carried off during his club's Bundesliga game with Stuttgart.

The 36-year-old collided with Stuttgart defender Martin Stranzl shortly before the end of the sides' goalless draw.

The clash resulted in the goalkeeper having to be treated on the pitch for several minutes before being taken to hospital with head and facial injuries.

It is believed Reinke suffered several broken bones to his face.

Bremen officials stated that the operation had gone well but it was too early to tell the extent of the damage.

A shocked Werder Bremen captain, Torsten Frings said after the game: "It's very sad and a difficult situation for us all.

"Andreas is our keeper and we will always stand by him, we can only keep our fingers crossed for him now and hope that he makes a swift recovery."

Reinke has been Werder's number one all season making 28 appearances.
