Japan full-back signs three-year contract with Bundesliga club

Japan international Atsuto Uchida has secured a move to Schalke after joining the club from Kashima Antlers for an undisclosed fee. The right-back has signed a three-year contract with Schalke after finalising the deal while on World Cup duty with Japan. Uchida has been a mainstay of the Antlers team in recent seasons and is one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Japanese football for many a year. An excellent crosser of the ball, the 22-year-old becomes the first Japanese player on the books of Bundesliga outfit Schalke. He is manager Felix Magath's fourth new signing this summer as the Royal Blues prepare for the dual challenge of Bundesliga and Champions League football next season. Uchida joins fellow new boys Christoph Metzelder, Erik Jendrisek and Tim Hoogland at the club who have lost Kevin Kuranyi, Gerald Asamoah and Ze Roberto since finishing second last season. Selected in the J-League Team of the Year for the past two seasons, Uchida will be aiming to follow up his move to Schalke by starting Japan's opening game of the World Cup against Cameroon on Monday.
