Bochum surge to summit

BUNDESLIGA new boys Bochum surged to the top of the table with a 3-1 away win over FC Nurnberg.

In what many regard as an early six-pointer Bochum came out on top against Nurnberg with former Spanish international Thomas Christiansen the main influence on the match.

The former Spanish international striker bagged a brace after two and 20 minutes to put the newly-promoted Ruhr side in the driving seat.

Sasa Ciric pulled one back for the home side in the 53rd minute, but it was a false dawn as Vahid Hashemian made it 3-1 seven minutes from time to give Bochum a nose bleed at the Bundesliga zenith.

Schalke were the only other team to win in Germany on Saturday afternoon but left it until very late on against Wolfsburg.

Belgian international Sven Vermant netted the only game after 89 minutes following good work from Victor Agali to clinch the three points at the Arena Auf Schalke.

Borussia Monchengladbach played out an entertaining scorless draw with Bayern Munich at the Bokelberg.

Bayern included new signings Ze Roberto and Michael Ballack in the starting XI but Gladbach held firm and shared the spoils with the Bundesliga favourites.

Miroslav Klose (pictured) saved a point for Kaiserslautern in a 1-1 draw with Stuttgart at the Gottlieb-Daimler Stadion.

Sean 'Crocodile' Dundee tore into the Kaiserslautern defence on the stroke of half-time to give Stuttgart a deserved lead.

But German international Klose levelled on 52 minutes with the Stuttgart back-line claiming the marksman was offside from a Vratislav Lokvenc through ball.

Bayer Leverkusen shared the spoils with Energie Cottbus at the Friendship Stadium in a 1-1 draw.

After an evenly-contested first period Bayer went in front through summer signing Jan Simak.

The Czech midfielder, a close season recruit from Hannover, broke the deadlock on 65 minutes to hand last season's runners up a 1-0 lead.

However, Klaus Toppmoller's charges could not hold onto the slender advantage and 10 minutes from time Hungarian international Vilmos Sebok headed an equaliser for The Lausitzer to make it 1-1.
