Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels claimed their 3-0 DFB-Pokal win at St Pauli had helped repair their dented confidence ahead of their trip to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Dortmund, who have lost their last four games in the league, cruised to a much-needed victory over their second-division opponents.

Their poor run has left them in 15th place in the table, already 14 points behind leaders Bayern, but Hummels insisted the cup win was a "step forward".

"The second half wasn't as good as the first one, but it was important to progress," he said on the club website. "All in all a commanding performance from us.

"We've never had to go through anything like this, it dents your confidence. But we've taken a great step forward.

"We are having a great game on Saturday. It's a great challenge, but if there's one game to gain confidence, it's the one against Bayern."
