Christian Gentner is to continue as captain of Stuttgart, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

The 29-year-old midfielder, part of the Stuttgart side which won the Bundesliga title in 2007 and back with the Swabians since 2010 after a spell at Wolfsburg, has the backing of the club's coach Armin Veh.

"He's developed well and, in view of his age, he's even more mature now," Veh said on sport1.de. "That's why it was an easy decision for me."

Veh was also coach of Stuttgart when they won the title in 2007 and his first competitive match back at the helm comes on Saturday, when they face 2. Bundesliga side Bochum in the first round of the DFB-Pokal.

He is not concerned about his side potentially falling at the first hurdle in the domestic cup competition, though.

"I've not had a bad impression of my team in any way," he said. "We may not have been lucky with the draw, though, because they've got plenty of self-confidence.

"It's not going to be easy, but it would not mean the end of the world if we do go out."

The 2. Bundesliga season started a fortnight ago and, with a win and a draw, Bochum are currently sitting at the top of the pile.
