Defender held by police in connection with blaze at his house

Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has expressed his shock after defender Breno was arrested in connection with a fire at his home earlier this week. The Brazilian was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke when his home in one of Munich's most affluent districts was destroyed by the blaze on Monday night, but he has since been taken into custody on suspicion of deliberately starting the fire. "We were all very surprised, of course," said Heynckes on Sky television, confirming reports the 21-year-old was being held by Munich police for questioning. "But anything that is said about the issue at the moment is purely speculation and we must first wait for all of the facts before being able to comment." The Bavarian club have promised to give Breno all the assistance he requires with the club's director of sport Christian Nerlinger spending "day and night" in contact with the defender, according to Heynckes.

Incredible

And the club's president Uli Hoeness has criticised the Munich police authorities' heavy-handed approach to a sensitive situation. "It is incredible the way the Munich state prosecutors are dealing with this thing," he told reporters after Bayern's 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. "It is incredible that they stick the lad in prison. We are absolutely disgraced by it." According to reports, Breno has been taken into custody due to the fear he could flee the country but Bayern's chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said that is an irrational fear. "His passport has been destroyed in the fire and, as far as I know, he cannot flee anywhere without that," he said. "We as Breno's employer owe it to the player that we give him our support. "The issue needs to be treated with fairness and sensitivity."
