Germany international hopes to regain full fitness and find new club

Wolfsburg have complied with the request of injury-plagued defender Arne Friedrich and ended his contract. The 32-year-old's contract was meant to run until 2013 and had played just 15 of the 40 games that he was available for. Friedrich signed for the club last year but a series of injuries and a back operation forced him to miss large chunks of the last campaign and the start of this one. Coach Felix Magath lamented the Germany international's decision but was powerless to help him change his mind. "He came to us asking to end his contract," said Magath. "We regret this and wish him all the best in the future." Friedrich has won 82 caps for the national team and his news will come as a further blow to Wolfsburg who have struggled this season and are 14th in the table.
