Uruguay international handed contract boost

Schalke midfielder Gustavo Varela has been handed a one-year contract extension. The 30-year-old Uruguay international has suffered a series of serious injuries during his time at the Veltins Arena, but general manager Andreas Muller believes he deserves the chance to resurrect his career with the Royal Blues. "We've always been convinced of his qualities as a footballer and his attitude," Muller told the club's official website. "He has always put himself at the service of the team and his identification with the club is exemplary." Varela also expressed his delight at the deal, adding: "All I want to do is play football again at last and contribute to the success of the team at Schalke. "In my six years here the people have seen that I have never gone easy on my body for this goal. But now I'm fit again and only looking forward."
