Schalke have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Albert Streit in January.

Midfielder to join in New Year, rather than next summer

Schalke have agreed a deal to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Albert Streit in January, rather than at the end of the season. Streit was originally due to link up with Schalke next summer, but will now head to the title hopefuls on 1st January. He has accepted a contract through to 2012 with Schalke, with Frankfurt due to receive an undisclosed fee for the 27-year-old. "We have reached agreement about a transfer on 1 January 2008, assuming that Streit passes his medical next Friday," Schalke general manager Andreas Muller told the club's official website.

Intensive rehab programme

Streit is currently recovering from a knee operation, but Schalke appear confident he will be fit to make his debut once the Bundesliga resumes after the winter break. Muller added: "Albert is following an intensive rehabilitation programme. "We anticipate he will be back by the end of January." After starting his career with Frankfurt, Streit rejoined the club from Cologne in 2006 and has made 11 Bundesliga appearances this season.
