Schalke starlet signs for Werder

Werder Bremen have beaten the clock to push through a deadline day deal to sign Schalke's Sebastian Boenisch. The highly-rated defender has put pen-to-paper on a four-year-deal with his new side, for a fee of 3million euros [£2million]. Bremen manager Klaus Allofs said: "I am very glad that we have got the transfer through in time. "We wanted to do this before the summer window closes." The 20-year-old has echoed his new manager's delight, and has stated that he is relishing the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football. Boenisch made nine appearances for Schalke before making the switch to their German rivals.
