Scaloni seals Racing switch

Lionel Scaloni has signed a one-year contract with Racing Santander.

Lionel Scaloni has sealed a switch to Racing Santander.

The Argentina international, who featured for La Albiceleste at the World Cup this past summer, has agreed a one-year contract with Santander.

The 28-year-old has been in limbo since negotiating a release from his Deportivo La Coruna contract at the end of August.

Scaloni joined Depor from Estudiantes de La Plata in 1998, and was in the side that won the league in 2000.

After falling out of favour under Depor coach Joaquin Caparros, Scaloni spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, where he started in The Hammers' FA Cup final defeat to Liverpool.

The addition of Scaloni will come as a timely boost to Racing, who, after narrowly avoiding relegation last time out, have begun the new season in a similarly inauspicious fashion following back-to-back defeats.

"The arrival of Scaloni is excellent for us in terms of experience," said coach Miguel Angel Portugal.
