Roma defender Cristian Chivu has undergone surgery after breaking his nose in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League clash with Roma.
Chivu picked up the injury when he was hit by Fred's elbow just moments before the final whistle.
He remained on the ground for some time as he struggled with his breathing, but Fred was only yellow carded.
Roma's medical staff will now assess Chivu over the next few days before declaring when he will be able to return to action.
The Romanian is set to miss Roma's Serie A clash against Udinese on Sunday.
