Serie A round-up

Fiorentina were held to a 1-1 draw by fifth-placed Roma at the Artemio Franchi.

Fiorentina missed the chance to strengthen their position in the UEFA Champions League places after a 1-1 home draw with Roma.

The Giallorossi were a point behind the Viola for the fourth and last Champions League spot in the Serie A table and Sunday's match at the Artemio Franchi was considered a pivotal contest for those places.

It was the Tuscan club that got off to a fantastic start, as prolific goalscorer Luca Toni added to his impressive tally with a first-minute opener for the Florence outfit.

Despite plenty of chances at both ends, Roma earned a valuable point when Leandro Cufre equalised midway through the second half to keep Roma a point behind their hosts.

Chievo remain sixth after a 2-1 victory over Livorno, with the Brazilian Carvalho Amauri giving the Verona club the lead on 14 minutes.

Cristiano Lucarelli made sure the scoreline was level at half time with an equaliser five minutes before the break, but Chievo claimed the winner through a Victor Obinna penalty on the hour mark.

Chievo finished the match with ten men, as Luciano de Oliveira was sent off seven minutes from time for a second bookable offence.

Empoli boosted their chances of Serie A survival after an entertaining 3-3 draw with Lazio at Rome's Stadio Olimpico.

The Roman club took a two-goal lead through Goran Pandev (3) and Valon Behrami (7) before Empoli replied through Vittorio Tosto (24).

Francesco Tavano (63) restored parity for the visitors before Paolo Di Canio put Lazio back in front with 11 minutes remaining.

The Biancoceleste could not hold on, as Empoli earned a draw through a Massimo Oddo own-goal in injury time.

Ascoli held Palermo to a 1-1 draw at La Favorita, with the Sicilians taking the lead through Andrea Caracciolo (35).

The match turned after Palermo's second-half substitute Paul Codrea was sent off for a second bookable offence on 65 minutes and with the extra man, Ascoli earned a point with a leveller from Pasquale Foggia (71).

Sampdoria were also held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Cagliari, with Marcello Castellini (14) handing the Genoa club a half-time lead.

The Sardinians, however, earned a valuable point when Honduran David Suazo (67) found the scoresheet for Cagliari.

Goals from Antonio Di Natale (20) and Felipe Da Silva (52) gave struggling Udinese a vital 2-0 win over Parma.

Finally, Reggina came from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with Siena at the Oreste Granillo.

Erjon Bogdani (20) gave Siena a half-time lead before Nicola Amoruso (51) earned a point for Reggina.
