The supremely gifted Romanian defender completed a £12 million move to the Eternal City earlier in the summer, but doubts had always hovered regarding Roma's ability to finance the deal.
Ajax claim to have given Roma every chance to finance the deal, but announced on Friday that they had called a halt to the transfer.
Roma, though, have issued a swift response, saying guarantees have been sent to Amsterdam and that Chivu will start the season with them.
There still appears to be some doubt surrounding the transfer, but Roma seem determined to keep Chivu which would prevent a late approach from a rival European club.
