Inter defender is hospital after heavy collision

Inter Milan defender Cristian Chivu faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after fracturing his skull. The Romania international sustained the injury during Inter's 1-0 win over Chievo on Wednesday. A clash of heads with Chievo skipper Sergio Pellissier early in the second half did the damage, forcing both men from the field. He now looks set to be out of action for the foreseeable future, with Inter boss Jose Mourinho admitting the omens do not look good. "He is in hospital," the Portuguese coach told Inter Channel. "He has a skull fracture and we hope he can return as soon as possible but I think he will stay off the pitch for a long time." Chivu will require surgery to help fix the problem, but it is unclear how long medical experts will then advise him to steer clear of competition before he can make a return to the first-team fold at Giuseppe Meazza.
