Stuttgart miss out on striker

Stuttgart have failed in a bid to prise Nigerian striker Stephen Makinwa away from Atalanta.

New Stuttgart chief Giovanni Trapattoni had earmarked Makinwa as a forward capable of flourishing in the Bundesliga and had fired off an offer to relegated Atalanta.

The Italians accepted the proposal and gave Stuttgart permission to talk to Makinwa, but he gave their contract offer short shrift.

It is believed that the 21-year-old is keen on securing a move to Internazionale, having been informed that he is wanted by Roberto Mancini.

Mancini is said to be looking to bring in Makinwa as the replacement for the departed Christian Vieri, but talks with Atalanta have been put on the backburner until the future of Parma's Alberto Gilardino has been resolved.

Inter are keen to bring in both forwards, but their priority is to secure the services of Gilardino before making a move for Makinwa.
