Atalanta sack Stefano Colantuono as they target Serie A survival

Atalanta coach Stefano Colantuono has become the fifth Serie A boss to lose his job this season after being relieved of his duties on Wednesday.

The sacking of Colantuono, who will be replaced by Edy Reja, follows those of Eugenio Corini (Chievo), Walter Mazzarri (Inter Milan), Pierpaolo Bisoli (Cesena) and Zdenek Zeman (Cagliari).

Colantuono returned to the club 2010, after having previously managed them for two years until 2007. But after four successive defeats they are now just three points above the relegation zone.

It is in stark contrast to the support he received when he got Atalanta promoted to the top flight in his first season back in charge.

A club statement said: "Atalanta have sacked coach Stefano Colantuono and have entrusted the team to Mr Edy Reja. The club expresses their profound respect and gratitude towards Mr Colantuono for the qualified work he carried out in the last five years.”

Reja has had a long and varied career in charge of several Italian clubs including Lazio, Napoli and Genoa.
