Werder Bremen have confirmed their interest in Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The Bundesliga club are keen to reinforce their backline this summer and have set their sights on the 23-year-old.
Papastathopoulos joined AC Milan from Genoa last year but has struggled to make an impact, and there has been talk of him returning to Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Bremen general manager Klaus Allofs told
BILD: "We have been talking to Sokratis Papastathopoulos (about a move to Weserstadion). But there is work to do."
And former Greece head coach Otto Rehhagel has backed the potential switch, highlighting the stopper's qualities.
Schmitz
He said: "Werder Bremen would be able to enjoy his signature. He is a real athlete with big ambition. He has a good heading game and he also has a strong shot."
Meanwhile, Schalke have revealed that Bremen are interested in 22-year-old midfielder Lukas Schmitz, but they face competition for his signature.
Schalke general manager Horst Heldt told
Reviersport: "It's a fact we have been receiving enquiries for Lukas Schmitz lately.
"Two of these enquiries are from the Bundesliga, one is from a foreign country. All I am able to confirm is that I have had talks with my colleague Klaus Allofs (of Werder Bremen) about the player."
