Mainz have finally completed the signing of striker Andreas Ivanschitz from Panathinaikos.

Bundesliga surprise package pay £50k for midfielder

Mainz have finally completed the signing of former Austria international Andreas Ivanschitz from Panathinaikos for £50,000. The midfielder initially moved from Greece 18 months ago in a loan deal that would have expired at the end of this season. It looked as if Ivanschitz was set to return to Panathinaikos, but he has signed a contract at Bruchwegstadion that runs until June 2013. Dampening the good news regarding Ivanschitz, Mainz have suffered a setback after it was confirmed that Hungary international Adam Szalai has suffered a cruciate ligament injury. The former Real Madrid striker sustained the problem when Mainz, who continue to provide the surprise package in the Bundesliga, won at Kaiserslautern last weekend. Mainz general manager Christian Heidel told the club's official website: "This is extremely hard luck for Adam. We are devastated about the extent of the injury."
