Guerrero hurt by Athletic snub

ATHLETIC BILBAO star Julen Guerrero admits he is hugely disappointed at being left out of the first-team squad for last weekend's game with Mallorca.

The 29-year-old, club captain at the Basque outfit, has suffered a difficult time at his hometown club in recent seasons seeing his playing opportunities limited under a succession of coaches.

New Bilbao coach Ernesto Valverde has now increased Guerrero's woes by overlooking him, but Athletic's former 'golden boy' insists he will continue to work hard to win his place back.

"I am going to continue coming in every day and working as hard as possible," stated Guerrero.

"I'll continue to think about every game whilst training during the week and hoping that come the next game, or the one after I will be back.

"What I have to do is to work hard daily.

"I always head home feeling satisfied with my effort. The rest is not up to me.

"I spend all my days thinking about football, Athletic and me, and obviously I have my opinion but I would prefer to keep it to myself."

Guerrero went on to add that he had not thought about leaving Athletic, declaring his objective to end his career at the club.

"I have never thought about it (leaving), nor would I. My aim is to end my career here, that's the only thing I have in my head."
