Betis leading charge for Gomes

FIORENTINA'S Portuguese striker Nuno Gomes has now been linked to a move to Spain with Real Betis reportedly leading the way.

Having lost Gaston Casas to a seemingly season-long injury, Betis have done extremely well to stay in contention for a European place and currently lie eighth in La Liga, but along with Alaves are the lowest scorers in the top half of the table.

Now with Gomes seeking a move away from Italy, asking for his contract to be annulled because of the financial problems in Florence and being booed for his troubles, Betis are believed to be close to closing in on him.

February 14 would appear to be a crucial day in any potential move, with the Italian league announcing their decision on whether or not Gomes's contract will be rescinded.

Boavista and Benfica have already made their interest known, while a host of European clubs are undoubtedly waiting in the wings.

Reports in Spain indicate that Betis could register the forward even though the Spanish transfer window has closed and the Seville-based side would certainly benefit for a striker of the class of Gomes in their side.
