Villarreal have lost the services of full back Javi Venta for one month.
The defender tore the abductor muscle in his right leg in the UEFA Champions League tie with Rangers on Tuesday.
He was substituted at half time in that game and tests have now revealed the full extent of the problem.
He is likely to miss his side's next four league games against Mallorca, Atletico Madrid, Valencia and Real Betis as well as the first leg of the Champions League quarter final match.
Josemi will replace him for the league games, although Villarreal boss Manuel Pellegrini will have to make other arrangements in Europe as the former Liverpool full back is cup-tied.
Villarreal are already without the services of Argentine star Juan Pablo Sorin who was injured recently on international duty.
