Villarreal chase Cesar swap

Villarreal are readying themselves for a transfer window swoop for Deportivo's Cesar.

Villarreal are readying themselves for a transfer window raid on Deportivo La Coruna with defender Cesar their target.

The 28-year-old stopper, a full Spanish international, is surplus to requirements at The Riazor with Jorge Andrade and Juanma forming boss Joaquin's Caparros' first-choice pairing in central defence.

He has made only two substitute appearances for Depor this term and, with his contract expiring in the summer, the Galicians are ready to sell him in January.

Villarreal believe he could be a valuable addition to their squad and are ready to offer forward Antonio Guayre to try and smooth the transfer.

Guayre - who scored the only goal in Villarreal's decisive UEFA Champions League win over Lille on Wednesday - will also be out of contract at the end of the season and is seeking a new challenge.

Depor are keen on the 25-year-old but would prefer to wait until the summer and sign him on a free transfer rather than take him as part of a swap deal for Cesar in January.

Another reason for their reticence to do a swap deal is the fact that president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro would rather not strengthen any of their Primera rivals by selling domestically and would instead prefer to offload Cesar to England where he has several suitors and could fetch a larger fee.

Newcastle, Liverpool and Tottenham have all been credited with an interest in the Depor man, although the Riazor outfit may well be interested in a swap deal with Villarreal if their Primera rivals offer money along with Guayre.
