Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that he and his coaching staff are being careful with Cristiano Ronaldo, despite insisting that his knee injury is "forgotten".
Ronaldo has not played in either of Madrid's pre-season friendly games against Inter Milan and Roma in the USA, as a result of the knee injury he picked up towards the end of last season.
Ronaldo looked far from his best during the World Cup as Portugal were eliminated in the group stages, and has been training separately to his team-mates while in the US.
Asked about Ronaldo's condition following Madrid's 1-0 defeat to Roma in Dallas, Ancelotti said: "We have to be careful. He is taking things very carefully, but the problem is forgotten."
The Italian coach however could not confirm whether Ronaldo would be able to face former club United next Saturday in Michigan.
Ancelotti added: "He is training well by himself and today he did a double training session. We are going to see over the next few days whether he can play against Manchester United."
The defeat to Roma means Madrid will not be playing in the final of the Guinness International Champions Cup, and will return to the Spanish capital after the game with Louis van Gaal's side.
The European champions will then travel to Cardiff to play fellow Spaniards Sevilla in the Uefa Super Cup on August 13.
"We will have more time to rest, but Madrid can never be happy about a defeat, and nor can a coach," added Ancelotti.
"But we will be able to prepare better for the Super Cup."
