Liga round-up

Ten-man Real Madrid beat Osasuna, while Malaga are relegated.

Ten-man Real Madrid earned a hard-fought 1-0 win in a tempestuous clash with Osasuna on Sunday evening.

In a match of two penalties, Real converted theirs, crucially, through Julio Baptista in the 51st minute.

When given a similar opportunity 12 minutes later after a foul from Pablo Garcia on Pierre Webo the hosts fluffed their chance to level, although credit must be due to Iker Casillas who pulled off an excellent save to his left to thwart Francisco Punal.

Casillas blotted his copybook, however, ten minutes from time when he was dismissed for a second bookable offence for kicking the ball away.

Despite being a man down Real rarely looked like conceding an equaliser for all the home side's effort.

Sevilla enhanced their claims for a top-six finish by defeating nine-man Real Sociedad 2-1.

Jesus Navas (57) and a penalty from Jose Marti (68), after Aitor Lopez Rekarte received his marching orders for a deliberate handball inside the area, secured the win.

Substitute Nihat Kahveci also received his marching orders in the 83rd minute for serious foul play before Gari Uranga registered a late consolation.

Racing Santander gave their survival hopes a huge shot in the arm by claiming a 3-2 victory at Malaga which confirmed the bottom club's relegation.

Francisco Casquero struck in the 17th minute for the visitors but a quickfire brace from Malaga's Francisco Ruano turned the match on its head just after the half hour.

Racing were not to be denied, however, and Antonito equalised within ten minutes of the second half.

Juanjo's strike ten minutes from time secured the priceless victory.

Real Mallorca followed Racing's lead later in the evening by claiming a much-needed 1-0 win at Atletico Madrid. Guttierez Jonas was the visitors' matchwinner ten minutes from time.

Second placed Valencia comfortably disposed of third-from-bottom Alaves 3-0 to delay Barcelona's title celebrations for a few days more at least.

Ruben Baraja (23) and Pablo Aimar (33) effectively sowed up the outcome and David Villa's penalty four minutes after the interval put the seal on the win.

Elsewhere, Getafe and Villarreal and Real Zaragoza and Espanyol drew 1-1.

The Yellow Submarines, no doubt still smarting from their European exit at the hands of Arsenal, had to settle for a point at Getafe following a frantic start.

Jaime Gavilan's opener for the hosts inside the first minute was cancelled out less than two minutes later by Guillermo Franco.

Ewerthon gave Zaragoza a ninth-minute lead against Espanyol.

But Daniel Jarque equalised in the 66th minute before the hero turned villain by receiving his marching orders in stoppage time for a second bookable offence.
