In a match of two penalties, Real converted theirs, crucially, through Julio Baptista in the 51st minute.
When given a similar opportunity 12 minutes later after a foul from Pablo Garcia on Pierre Webo the hosts fluffed their chance to level, although credit must be due to Iker Casillas who pulled off an excellent save to his left to thwart Francisco Punal.
Casillas blotted his copybook, however, ten minutes from time when he was dismissed for a second bookable offence for kicking the ball away.
Despite being a man down Real rarely looked like conceding an equaliser for all the home side's effort.
