New Barcelona signing Arda Turan says he can't wait to play in the Barca team alongside Lionel Messi, but states he is not a Xavi replacement

Turkey captain Arda Turan has been officially unveiled by Barcelona following his £29m transfer from Atletico Madrid.

The midfielder arrived at the Nou Camp from Istanbul on Thursday to sign a five-year contract with the European champions.

"This is a great day for me. I am very happy. It is very important for my career and for my country that I have signed for FC Barcelona," Turan said.

"I always said (Leo) Messi is the best. But my idol is (Andres) Iniesta. I can't wait to play with him.

"No one can replace Xavi. I am here to give all that I have but I'm not here to equal Xavi. Xavi is a world football icon and will always be a symbol of Barca."

The 28-year-old opted to move to Barcelona despite late interest from French champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Turan will not be able to play for Barca until January when the club’s transfer ban is lifted. The embargo on Barcelona was imposed over irregularities in signing young players.

Turan started his career at Galatasaray in 2005 and made 127 appearances for the club before moving to Atletico six years later.

"It will be hard not to play for six months," he added. "The only thing I want is to adapt to the team as soon as possible.

"Coach Luis Enrique really wanted me and that makes me very happy. I'm going to do everything I can to repay that trust."
