Diego Simeone rejected a "huge" offer from Manchester City and several other European clubs and will sign a new contract with Atletico Madrid, according to Guillem Balague.

The Atletico boss is highly sought-after after winning La Liga with the club last year and taking them to the Champions League final, but is close to commiting to the club until 2020.

Speaking on Revista de La Liga, Balague said City, Paris Saint-Germain and two Italian clubs came in for the 44-year-old, but says Simeone is happy at the Vicente Calderon Stadium.

"He had a huge offer from City, a huge offer from PSG, from two Italian teams, but he is close to signing a new deal with Atletico Madrid until 2020," Balague, citing Simeone's representatives, said.

"Five more years, and that is not normal in Spanish football but Atletico Madrid realise they need Simeone and Simeone realises he is happy with what Atletico Madrid does."

Simeone's agent and sister Natalia hinted last week that the Spaniard is to extend his contract after revealing the club are set for "good news" in the coming days.

She told Spanish state TV: "Surrounding the renewal of Simeone at the club, there will be good news in the next few days. The fans went home happy tonight and they will be happy again soon."
