Ex-Real defender makes unlikely return to Europe

Former Brazil left-back Roberto Carlos has signed for Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. The club confirmed they have signed the 37-year-old on a two-and-a-half-year deal after his contract with Brazilian club Corinthians was ended by mutual agreement on Saturday. "The Anzhi Makhachkala football club officially announces it has signed a labour agreement with 2002 world champion defender Roberto Carlos," read a statement on the club's official website. The former Real Madrid defender won 125 caps for Brazil, helping them win the 2002 World Cup and reach the 1998 final. His 11-year spell with the Spanish giants came to an end in 2007, with Roberto Carlos joining Fenerbahce before returning to Brazil last year with Corinthians and was voted the best left-back in the 2010 Brazilian championship. However, the ex-Inter Milan and Palmeiras full-back was targeted by fans during violent protests against the team following their shock early exit from the Copa Libertadores this month.
