Simao holds nerve to see off PSG

Benfica captain Simao Sabrosa converted a late penalty to knock PSG out of the Uefa Cup.

Benfica captain Simao Sabrosa converted a late penalty to send his side through at the expense of Paris Saint Germain.

The Uefa Cup last 16 tie was heading for extra-time with Benfica leading 2-1, following PSG's win by that scoreline in the first leg a week ago.

But with just a minute left on the clock, Simao stepped up to coolly tuck away his spot-kick for his second goal of the game to clinch a 3-1 success.

The winger had put the Portuguese giants ahead on 12 minutes when he produced a composed finish from Nuno Gomes' cross from the right.

PSG, looking for a lift away from their domestic travails, came close to equalising midway through the first half when Jerome Rothen hit the post.

Minutes later, though, Benfica went 2-0 ahead as Petit delivered a delicious lob over Mickael Landreau from outside the area.

Portuguese striker Pauleta then brought PSG back into the contest when he headed home Rothen's cross on 32 minutes.

With the match trundling towards extra-time, Youssouf Mulumbu brought down Leo in the box and picked up his second yellow card in the process.

Up stepped Simao to score from 12 yards and book Benfica's place in the draw for the quarter-finals on Friday.
