Newcastle's hopes of signing Sochaux's Modibo Maiga appear to have ended after the striker chose to stay with the French club.

Summer transfer target commits future to French club Sochaux

Newcastle's hopes of signing Sochaux's Modibo Maiga appear to have ended after the striker decided to commit his future to the French club. Magpies boss Alan Pardew had made the 24-year-old one of his main targets in the summer transfer window but failed to acquire his services. The Ligue 1 club complained to Fifa alleging that Newcastle had not carried out their approach of the striker in a correct manner. Maiga also went on strike in protest at not being able to move clubs, but has played in three of Sochaux's six games this season. Newcastle were believed to be ready to reignite their interest when the transfer window reopens in January, but the Mali international says he is content with how things are.

Forgotten

He told L'Equipe: "Everything is forgotten. I don't want to speak any more on the issue. "I have now recovered from some physical problems and I now have the chance to play in the first team. "Every player likes to receive offers but in my case the president did not want to sell. "He spoke with me and told me I needed to stay at Sochaux and I prefer to leave things the way they are."
