Lyon's Elber surprise

Lyon are keen to speak with Giovane Elber, after the striker claimed he is set to leave.

Lyon are keen to hold a meeting with Giovane Elber, after the striker claimed he is in talks with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Elber seems poised to leave the French champions during the January transfer window and a return to Die Bundesliga is on the cards.

The 32-year-old joined Lyon in the summer of 2003 from Bayern Munich but has missed much of this season due to a knee injury.

He is close to a return to fitness and has claimed that Lyon will not stand in his way of a move to Monchengladbach.

Officials of the Ligue 1 side were surprised to learn of Elber's comments and are eager to discuss the situation with the experienced forward.

"No one knew about that," said Lyon official Olivier Blanc. "We only knew about it by reading the papers.

"Anyway, (chairman) Jean-Michel Aulas' door is always open."

Lyon appear amenable to Elber's departure as his exit, fee permitting, will free up one of the non-EU spots in their squad.

Coach Paul Le Guen would be left with the option of loaning out Nilmar in the New Year, if Elber stays at Stade Gerland.

But Elber's expected departure from the club will allow his younger compatriot to maintain his recent impressive form for Le Guen's side.
