Lyon lead again

LYON became the third side to top Le Championnat on Saturday as they inflicted a 4-0 defeat on Strasbourg at Stade de la Meinau to de to topple Marseille into second place.

Brazilian striker Sonny Anderson started the rout with just four minutes registered on the clock before Eric Carriere (59), Pegguy Luyindula (64) and Philippe Violleau (79) wrapped up the match.

The race to be crowned champions of France will no doubt go down to the final game of the season as neither Marseille or Monaco look like giving up without a fight.

Marseille kept up the pace at the top of Le Championnat and reclaimed top-spot , albeit for a few hours, thanks to a 2-1 win over Bastia at Stade Velodrome on Saturday.

The hosts were given an early advantage with the dismissal of Bastia's goalkeeper Nicolas Penneteau for a professional foul.

Dimitri Sychev then gave Marseille the lead on the stroke of half-time before Daniel van Buyten (pictured) doubled the hosts' advantage with four minutes remaining.

Laurent Batlles pulled a consolation goal back for the visitors but Alain Perrin's men keep up their title challenge with just a few games remaining.

Bordeaux suffered a blow to their hopes of keeping pace with the top three as they were beaten by Auxerre at Parc Lescure.

French international Djibril Cisse scored a late winner but the visitors had Philippe Mexes sent-off on the stroke of full-time as Guy Roux's men move level on points with Girondins on 57 points.

The hunt for a Uefa Cup berth is shaping up to be just as interesting as the battle at the top as Sochaux recorded a 2-0 win over bottom club Troyes.

Sylvain Monsoreau opened the scoring on 48 minutes before Pierre-Alain Frau settled matters with a goal half an hour before full-time.

Nantes suffered a blow to their European prospects as they were beaten by Montpellier.

Fode Mansare scored the only goal of the game as Nantes also had Nicolas Gillet sent-off eight minutes from time.

Guingamp beat Lens 1-0 thanks to a strike early in the first half.

Florent Malouda scored on the quarter hour mark to set Guingamp on their way.

Lille continued to show their fighting qualities as they beat Rennes 1-0 to help their survival cause.

A Mile Sterjovski goal after half an hour was enough to gain maximum points in a match that also saw Cyril Jeunechamp sent-off on 68 minutes for fellow strugglers Rennes.

Lowly Ajaccio also proved their desire to remain in the French top-flight as they scored a vital 1-0 away win at Le Havre.

Bruno Rodriguez got the all important goal with 15 minutes remaining.

Nice were held to a 0-0 draw against relegation haunted Sedan.

The match passed largely without incident until Modeste M'Bami was dismissed 13 minutes into the second half.
